Musamam Black Intense is the darkest chapter of the Musamam story and the most technically interesting fragrance Lattafa has released. Lavender, nutmeg, sage and bergamot open it, geranium, rosyfolia, mahonial and cedarwood form the heart, and the base brings maple wood, patchouli, tonka bean, ambrofix and Cocoa Pulse, a material made exclusively for Lattafa that does not exist in any other fragrance.

The Cocoa Pulse story

This is the reason Musamam Black Intense is worth more attention than a typical release, and almost nobody explains it.

Cocoa Pulse is a bespoke material created by Givaudan exclusively for Lattafa. It is made by co-distillation, a process that fuses two materials at molecular level rather than simply blending them, and here it combines Cocoa Butter Absolute with Akigalawood, the peppery patchouli derivative. The result is neither chocolate nor patchouli but something in between, described by the perfumer as spicy and bittersweet.

Wearers pick it out immediately. It is most often described as a dark sweet chocolate note with a texture close to soft leather or saffron, and several say it is the dominant impression the fragrance leaves. If you have smelled nothing quite like it before, that is because you have not, and it does not appear in any fragrance outside this line.

Who made it

Musamam Black Intense was composed by Jordi Fernández of Givaudan and released in 2025. Named perfumers are unusual at this price, and the structure shows it.

What it smells like

The opening is crisp and aromatic. Lavender and sage give a clean herbal lift, bergamot brightens it, and nutmeg adds a spiced warmth underneath. Some wearers describe the first few minutes as smoky and almost resinous over the citrus, which is unusual for an opening built on lavender.

The heart is polished rather than floral. Rosyfolia brings a rose facet without the fullness of actual rose, mahonial adds a sweet tropical floral depth, geranium sharpens both, and cedarwood keeps the whole thing dry and structured.

The dry down is where it becomes addictive. Maple wood and tonka bean bring a caramelised warmth, patchouli grounds it, ambrofix gives the modern amber glow, and Cocoa Pulse threads its spicy bittersweet character through all of it. Woody gourmand rather than sweet gourmand, and it lingers.

Performance

Projection and longevity both sit above average for the category. Expect eight to ten hours on skin depending on your chemistry, with noticeable projection through the first few hours before it settles into a warm close finish. Clothing holds it considerably longer. Two or three sprays are plenty.

The honest view

Most wearers rate it highly and several call it the best of the three Musamams. It is not universally liked though, and the people who dislike it tend to find the opening sharp or the Cocoa Pulse too unusual rather than finding it weak. Performance is rarely the complaint.

If you already own Musamam or Musamam White Intense, this is a genuinely different fragrance rather than a darker rerun, so owning more than one makes sense.

Three releases, three directions. The original Musamam from 2022 is the smoky, structured one built on saffron, amberwood and incense. Musamam White Intense from 2023 is the brighter, creamier take. Black Intense, from 2025, is the deepest and the only one with Cocoa Pulse in it.
