Description

Laila by Ard Al Zaafaran is one of the most heavily built fragrances in the range, with fifteen notes across the three stages and an opening that does something most citrus fragrances do not. Lemon, bergamot and grapefruit give the expected brightness, then rhubarb and caramel arrive alongside them, so the first impression is tart and sweet at the same time rather than simply fresh.

That caramel in the top is the unusual choice. Most compositions hold their sweetness back for the base, which means Laila starts warmer and rounder than its citrus list suggests. Nutmeg adds a dry spice over the top of it.

Fragrance Profile

The heart is a classic floral trio. Lily of the valley brings a clean green dewiness, jasmine adds richness and rose gives it the structure. It is a deliberately familiar middle, and its job is to carry you from the busy opening down to the base without competing with either.

The base is where most of the work happens. Tonka bean, vanilla and cashmere give a soft powdery sweetness, musk and ambergris add warmth and depth, and vetiver sits underneath with an earthy dryness that keeps it from going too sugary. Six notes, and the result is a long, soft, skin-close finish rather than a projecting one.

A note on comparisons

We are not naming a designer original. No comparison has settled for Laila in the fragrance community, and the independent database entry for it is visibly incomplete, with its own reviewers describing notes the published list leaves out. There is no reliable basis for pointing you at something else.

Judge it on the pyramid above. If the citrus and gourmand combination is what appeals, Riqqa from the same house runs bergamot and spice into praline and vanilla with real comparisons behind it. Our inspired fragrances collection covers the wider category.

When to wear it

Autumn and spring suit it best, because it needs enough warmth to open the citrus and enough cool to keep the tonka and vanilla base comfortable. In high summer the caramel and ambergris can feel heavy, and in deep winter the citrus top disappears quickly.

It works for daytime and for evenings, and the soft base makes it easy to wear in company. Two or three sprays.

Who it is for

Leans feminine. It suits you if you like citrus openings but find most of them too thin, if you want a gourmand that is not a straight dessert, or if you want a long soft drydown rather than something that projects.

It suits you less if you want a clean, sharp citrus with nothing sweet in it, because the caramel arrives almost immediately, and less again if powdery bases are not for you.

The lemon, bergamot and grapefruit opening places it in our fresh and citrus range, while the caramel, tonka and vanilla connect it to our sweet and gourmand edit. The powdery musk finish puts it near our musky and powdery collection, and the full feminine range is in women’s perfumes.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does Laila smell like?

Tart lemon, grapefruit and rhubarb with caramel and nutmeg at the opening, moving through lily of the valley, jasmine and rose, and settling into tonka bean, vanilla, cashmere, musk, ambergris and vetiver. Bright and sweet at once, then soft and powdery.

Is it a gourmand?

Partly. The caramel in the top and the tonka and vanilla in the base give it genuine gourmand sweetness, but the citrus opening and floral heart stop it being a dessert fragrance.

What does rhubarb add?

A tart, slightly green sourness that works against the caramel. It is what makes the opening distinctive rather than simply a sweet citrus.

How long does it last?

Expect around seven to eight hours. The six-note base is built for longevity, though it sits close to the skin for most of that time rather than projecting.

Is it office friendly?

Yes, at two sprays. Projection is moderate after the first hour and the drydown is soft.

Is this bottle genuine?

Yes. Every bottle at Perfumeo is 100% authentic, factory sealed and sourced through authorised distributors.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are your fragrances 100% genuine?
Yes. Every fragrance we sell is authentic, brand-new and factory-sealed, sourced from authorised suppliers. We never sell testers, refills or imitations — each bottle is batch-coded so you can verify it.
How fast is delivery?
We offer free tracked UK delivery on every order. Orders placed before 2pm on a working day are dispatched the same day, and typically arrive within 2–3 working days.
How long will the scent last?
Longevity varies by fragrance and skin type. You can see our guidance for this scent in the Fragrance Profile above — richer amber, oud and gourmand scents generally last longest, while fresh and citrus styles are lighter.
How should I store my perfume?
Keep it away from direct sunlight, heat and humidity — a cool, dark drawer or cupboard is ideal. Stored well, a sealed fragrance keeps its quality for years.
