Mad Love is the heaviest thing Bujairami make. Raspberry and saffron open it bright and almost edible, then it turns: rose wreathed in incense smoke, suede leather, and a long oud and amberwood base that sits on skin for most of a day. It is an evening fragrance and it does not pretend otherwise.

Inspired By

Bujairami’s own listing states that Mad Love is inspired by Louis Vuitton Ombre Nomade. That is the manufacturer’s stated reference, published on their own site, not our reading of the scent.

Ombre Nomade was composed by Jacques Cavallier-Belletrud and launched in 2018. It is Louis Vuitton’s best-known fragrance and one of the most expensive widely available oud releases on the market, sold only through Louis Vuitton’s own boutiques and website. Mad Love is £37.99.

The note lists are unusually close. Ombre Nomade is published with nine notes: agarwood (oud), rose, incense, raspberry, saffron, amberwood, benzoin, birch and geranium. Bujairami list Mad Love with all nine of those, plus suede leather and musk. That is a complete overlap rather than a partial one, which is rarer than the dupe market’s marketing suggests.

A matching note list is not the same as a matching smell, and we would rather say so than let you find out at home. Note lists tell you which materials are present, not their quality, concentration or how they are balanced. Ombre Nomade uses a dense, resinous oud accord with a smokiness that holds its shape for hours. Mad Love is sweeter and more raspberry-forward in the first half hour, and the oud reads cleaner and less animalic. It is a close, well-made interpretation at a tenth of the cost, not a replacement bottle.

One clarification. Bujairami describe the reference as “Ombre Nomade Extrait”. Louis Vuitton has only ever released Ombre Nomade as an Eau de Parfum; there is no Extrait version of it. The “Extrait de Parfum” on our bottle is Bujairami’s own concentration, which is genuinely higher than an eau de parfum.

Mad Love or Madness? They Share an Inspiration

Worth knowing before you buy, because the two sit side by side in the range and nobody explains the difference. Bujairami list both Mad Love and Madness as inspired by Ombre Nomade, with effectively the same note skeleton. The difference is concentration:

• Mad Love is the extrait de parfum, and its note list adds suede leather and musk. Denser, closer to the skin, longer on the drydown.
• Madness is the eau de parfum. More lift in the opening and more projection in the first few hours.

As a rule of thumb: buy Mad Love if you want the oud heavier and lasting into the next day, and Madness if you want people across the room to notice. Neither is the better bottle; they are the same idea at two different volumes.

Performance

This is where the extrait concentration earns its money. Expect strong projection for the first two to three hours, then a close, resinous amber-oud drydown that stays on skin eight hours or more and survives on clothing into the next day. Two sprays is plenty, and one is enough in warm weather. Give it twenty minutes before judging it, because the raspberry opening is deliberately brighter than the fragrance it becomes.

When to Wear It

Autumn and winter evenings, dinners, events, cold night air. It is not an office fragrance and it is not a summer fragrance. If you want a Bujairami bottle you can wear anywhere, look at Ocean Eyes instead.
