Musk and Roses is the quiet one in the Ahmed Al Maghribi range, and for a lot of people it is the one that gets worn most. Raspberry, rose and musk, built simply and blended softly, it is the clean, close-wearing fragrance you reach for on ordinary days rather than big occasions.
Fragrance notes
The house lists it on three notes, which is an honest summary of what you smell:
- Top: Raspberry, fruity notes
- Heart: Rose
- Base: Musk
The fuller pyramid recorded on Fragrantica fills in the detail: apple, pineapple and citrus in the opening, rose, jasmine and red fruits at the heart, and musk, ambroxan, vanilla and sandalwood underneath.
What it actually smells like
The raspberry leads, and it leads strongly. The first ten minutes are juicy and tangy, bright rather than sugary, and several wearers have joked that the fragrance could just as fairly be called raspberry musk. Give it time and the rose arrives properly: soft, velvety and delicately powdery rather than dark or jammy.
The musk underneath is the interesting part. It avoids both traps that musk usually falls into, neither a laundry-detergent white musk nor an animalic one. It reads slightly earthy, clean and faintly floral, which is what gives the fragrance its skin-like quality. The dry down is soft, warm and close, with vanilla and sandalwood rounding it off.
Performance
Longevity is good in the way this house is known for, but projection is deliberately modest. Musk and Roses stays close to the skin and wafts rather than announces, which makes it well suited to the office, hospital shifts, classrooms and anywhere a loud fragrance would not be welcome.
