Elysia Sugar Patchouli by Fragrance World is the most grown up fragrance in the Elysia line and the one we would point a sceptic towards. It opens boozy and dark with rum and plum, moves into a rich heart where a creme brulee accord is woven through orchid, osmanthus and rose, and then settles onto a base of brown sugar, patchouli, oud and musk. That base is what makes it. Where most sweet fragrances simply get sweeter as they wear, this one turns earthy and slightly smoky underneath the sugar, which gives it a depth and a seriousness the rest of the line does not have. What does Elysia Sugar Patchouli smell like?

The opening is boozy and fruity in equal measure. Rum brings a warm, slightly spiced alcohol sweetness, and plum adds a dark, jammy juiciness rather than a fresh fruit brightness. Together they set a rich, adult tone straight away. There is nothing light or airy about the first impression, and if you are expecting a simple sugary scent this will surprise you.

The heart is where the fragrance is at its most decadent.
