Hulm by Riiffs 100ml Extrait De Parfum
Hulm is the elegant one, and an extrait de parfum at 80% concentration rather than an eau de parfum. Juicy raspberry plum and peach nectar open it, a proper floral heart of peony, tuberose and orris root follows, and it settles into a soft white musk trail. Where a lot of fruity florals at this price go straight for sweetness, this one uses the fruit as an introduction and then hands over to the flowers, which is why it wears far more grown up than the opening suggests.

What it smells like
The opening is ripe and velvety. Raspberry and plum together give a deep red-fruit sweetness, peach nectar adds a soft juiciness, and Rose de Mai sits underneath from the very start, which is unusual and gives the fruit a floral frame immediately.
The heart is the fragrance proper. Peony is fresh and dewy, tuberose brings a creamy white floral richness, and orris root, the material distilled from iris rhizomes and one of the most expensive in perfumery, adds a cool powdery elegance that lifts the whole thing. That powdery quality is what stops the fruit and tuberose becoming heavy.
The dry down is deliberately restrained. White musk gives a clean softness and Iso E Super a transparent woodiness, so the finish is close to the skin and quietly polished rather than sweet.
On Rose de Mai and orris
Both are worth knowing about. Rose de Mai is the May rose grown around Grasse in southern France, harvested over a few weeks each year and used in some of the most famous fragrances ever made. Orris root has to be aged for years before it can be processed, which is why it costs what it does. Their presence here is the reason Hulm reads more refined than a typical fruity floral.
When to wear it
