Parfums de Marly Percival Dupe: Is Kaaf the Best Alternative? How we checked this. Both note lists are pulled from Fragrantica rather than from retail listings, because retailers frequently publish the original fragrance’s pyramid against the interpretation. Shared notes are counted as a fraction of the original’s full pyramid. We do not quote percentages, because nobody publishes a formula and no percentage is verifiable.
Parfums de Marly Percival sells for around five times what Ahmed Al Maghribi Kaaf costs, and the two get compared constantly. Unlike most dupe claims, this one survives being checked.
The short answer
Kaaf shares five notes with Percival outright and both sit in the same citrus-aromatic-marine family. The structure matches: citrus and lavender over an aromatic floral heart, landing on clean ambroxan and musk.
Where they separate is the fruit. Kaaf pushes watermelon and red fruits forward, which makes it juicier, sweeter and considerably more approachable. Percival goes drier and more formal, with coriander, cinnamon and cardamom adding spice and tonka and balsam fir in the base.
The note lists, side by side
Ahmed Al Maghribi Kaaf (2022)
Top: watermelon, red fruits, Sicilian orange, lavender
Heart: lotus, jasmine, lily of the valley, sea accord
Base: sandalwood, ambroxan, white musk
Parfums de Marly Percival (2018)
Top: lavender, mandarin, bergamot, geranium, pink pepper
Heart: hedione, violet, jasmine, coriander, cinnamon, cardamom
Base: ambroxan, amberwood, musk, balsam fir, clearwood, tonka
Shared outright: lavender, citrus, jasmine, ambroxan, musk.
Five genuine overlaps out of Percival’s fifteen listed materials. That is a real structural relationship rather than a vague family resemblance, and it is considerably more than most advertised dupes manage.
What that actually means when you wear them
The lavender is the key. Both fragrances use it as the backbone, which is unusual in a fresh composition and is what stops either smelling like a generic blue aquatic. If you have ever wondered why Percival feels more considered than its competitors, the lavender is most of the answer, and Kaaf makes the same decision.
The ambroxan base is the second shared element. It gives both that modern amber radiance which pushes a fragrance outward from the skin, and it is why both perform better than a fresh fragrance normally does.
The difference lands in the opening. Kaaf gives you watermelon, cool and slightly green in the way real watermelon rind smells, with red fruits adding juiciness. Percival skips fruit entirely and uses pink pepper and geranium instead, which reads sharper and more grown up. Then in the heart, Percival’s coriander, cinnamon and cardamom create a spiced warmth that Kaaf simply does not have.
So which should you buy?
Buy Percival if you want the spice, the dryness and the formality. Nothing at a fifth of the price reproduces the coriander and cardamom in its heart, and if that is the part you love, no interpretation will satisfy you.
Buy Kaaf if you like Percival’s freshness but find it austere, or if you want a fresh fragrance that works everywhere without thinking about it. It is friendlier, fruitier and easier to wear.
The honest framing is that Kaaf is not a replacement for Percival. It is a different fragrance that happens to share its best structural idea, and it is very good on its own terms.
What about the Montblanc Legend Blue comparison?
This comes up too, and it is consistent rather than contradictory. Percival itself is frequently compared to the Legend family, so a fragrance sitting near Percival will naturally sit near Legend Blue as well. All three occupy the same citrus-aromatic territory.
Performance, which is where Kaaf surprises people
Fruity aquatics are usually the worst performers in perfumery, fading within two or three hours. Kaaf does not, and the reason is that Ahmed Al Maghribi builds its fragrances with a high oil concentration.
Expect clear projection through the first few hours and a soft radiant trail lasting most of a day, with clothing holding it longer. Three sprays is the sweet spot. Apply to moisturised skin and spray a collar if you want it to carry into the evening.
The rest of the Kaaf line
Kaaf has grown into three fragrances and they are genuinely different rather than strengths of one scent.
Kaaf Noir is the extrait: blood orange, juniper and Sicilian lemon over lavender and Iso E Super, finishing on cedarwood, ambroxan and vetiver. Cleaner, drier and longer wearing, and arguably the closer of the two to Percival’s formality.
Kaaf Pink goes fruitier and warmer, with bergamot, pink pepper and plum over lily of the valley and patchouli, landing on sandalwood, vetiver and caramel.
If the Percival comparison is what brought you here, start with the original Kaaf, then consider Noir if you want it drier.

Frequently asked questions
Is Kaaf a dupe of Percival?
It is the closest widely available interpretation, sharing lavender, citrus, jasmine, ambroxan and musk, and the same citrus-aromatic-marine structure. It is not identical: Kaaf adds watermelon and red fruits, Percival adds coriander, cinnamon and cardamom.
How many notes do Kaaf and Percival share?
Five of Percival’s fifteen listed materials. That is a genuine structural overlap rather than a coincidence of style.
Which is better, Kaaf or Percival?
Percival is the more refined composition and costs several times more. Kaaf is friendlier and performs well above its price. Neither replaces the other.
Does Kaaf last long?
Longer than most fresh fruity fragrances, thanks to the high oil concentration Ahmed Al Maghribi uses. Clear projection for the first few hours and a soft trail for most of a day.
Is Kaaf unisex?
Yes, and genuinely so, though the lavender gives it a slight masculine lean in wear.
Which Kaaf is closest to Percival?
The original for the overall character, though Kaaf Noir is drier and more formal, which is closer to Percival’s temperament if not its notes.
