Aswaar is one of the more ambitious things Riiffs has released, and it is an extrait de parfum at 80% concentration rather than an eau de parfum, which is why it wears with the weight it does. It opens sharp and spiced on ginger, cardamom and a full spread of citrus, moves through an unusual heart that pairs dewy lily of the valley with blackcurrant and lavender, then lands on a warm, modern base of bourbon vanilla, ambroxan and cashmeran. Fresh at the top, comfortable underneath, and considerably more interesting than a straightforward citrus opening would suggest.

What it smells like
The opening is bright and dry rather than sweet. Lemon peel and grapefruit give a zesty snap, bergamot rounds them, and ginger and cardamom cut through with a warm spiced edge. It reads energetic and slightly aromatic, closer to a modern fougère opening than a simple fresh citrus.
The heart is where it separates itself. Lily of the valley brings a green, dewy floral quality, cassis adds a tart blackcurrant sharpness, and clary sage and lavender give an aromatic herbal backbone with apple lending a crisp fruitiness. Few fragrances at this price attempt this much in the middle, and it is the reason Aswaar holds attention past the first half hour.
