Description
Oud of London is the debut release in La Beauté Paris’s Privé Collection, and the house has pinned its ambitions on it. The brief, in its own words, was to bottle a city that is vibrant, intoxicating and addictive. What that translates to on skin is a dark, resinous Arabian oud with a sweet smoky finish, dressed in a patterned amber-toned glass bottle and a heavy black box that looks far more expensive than it is.

How it wears
Most oud fragrances hold the agarwood back for the base. This one leads with it. Oud, musk and incense arrive together in the opening, which gives the first quarter of an hour a temple-smoke quality, dry and mystic rather than sweet. If you have only worn oud as a background note, that opening will feel bold. Stay with it.
The heart softens the edges. Amber brings a golden, balsamic warmth and dark woods thicken the texture, so the smoke settles into something rounder and more wearable. This is the stage most people fall for, where the fragrance stops announcing itself and starts glowing.
The base is where the London of the name shows up: smoky patchouli, earthy and slightly bitter, sweetened by vanilla into a warm, lingering trail. It ends closer to a gourmand oud than the opening suggests, and that contrast between the incense start and the vanilla finish is the whole appeal.
Oud of London or Oud of Dubai?
The two Privé releases sit at opposite ends of the same idea. Oud of London is the dark one: incense, smoke and patchouli, with vanilla arriving late. Oud of Dubai is the sweet one, rose and saffron over oud with a tonka and brown sugar base. If you want an oud that reads serious and smoky, choose London. If you want compliments, choose Dubai. Plenty of people end up with both.
Who it suits and when to wear it
Fully unisex. Men will read it as a serious smoky oud, women as a warm resinous amber, and the vanilla keeps both readings comfortable. It belongs to evenings, cold weather and occasions with a bit of ceremony to them. Autumn and winter are its natural home, and it makes a strong gift for anyone who already loves traditional Arabian oud and wants something with more polish. In summer heat the incense can feel dense, so save it for when the air cools.
The 85ml Eau de Parfum concentration gives it evening-appropriate presence from two or three sprays.
