Hawas Elixir is not what most people expect it to be, and that is worth saying plainly at the top. The original Hawas is a fresh, salty, aquatic fragrance and one of the most successful things Rasasi has ever made. Hawas Elixir shares its name and very little else. It is a cool herbal gourmand built on mint, lavender and dark chocolate over tonka and vanilla, and there is no aquatic material in it at all. If you buy this expecting a richer version of the original, you will be surprised. If you buy it for what it actually is, it is one of the more interesting things released under the Rasasi name in recent years.

Fragrance notes

Top notes: mugwort, bergamot, spearmint

Heart notes: dark chocolate, lavender, benzoin

Base notes: white musk, tonka bean, vanilla

This is the composition as published by Rasasi’s own store. We are being specific about the source because several large international retailers publish completely different and mutually contradictory pyramids for this fragrance, and at least one repeats the aquatic notes from the original Hawas, which do not belong here. Rasasi’s own description of it is simply the Elixir version of the amazing classic Hawas.

What it smells like

The opening is cool and green. Spearmint is immediately obvious, clean and slightly toothpaste like for the first minute before it settles, and mugwort sits underneath it adding a bitter, herbal, faintly medicinal edge that gives the whole thing an adult seriousness. Bergamot brightens the corners without turning it into a citrus scent.

Then the chocolate arrives and the fragrance becomes genuinely unusual. This is dark chocolate rather than milk chocolate, dry and bitter and cocoa like, and the combination of mint and dark chocolate is exactly as evocative as it sounds. Lavender sits in the middle of that pairing and is the note that holds it together, because lavender is naturally both herbal and slightly sweet and it bridges the two sides. Benzoin adds a warm, resinous, balsamic depth underneath.

The base is soft and comforting. Tonka bean and vanilla take over and turn the bitterness sweet, while white musk keeps everything clean and stops the gourmand side becoming cloying. Late on it smells warm, faintly minty, softly sweet and quite refined. It is a fragrance that changes considerably from spray to dry down, which is part of the appeal.

Longevity, projection and when to wear it

This one performs. Parfumo users rate its longevity at 8.3 out of 10 and its sillage at 8.0, with wear times around the ten hour mark commonly reported. It projects well for the first several hours before settling closer to the skin, and it survives a full day comfortably.

Autumn and winter suit it best. The mint keeps it from feeling stuffy in milder weather, but the chocolate, tonka and vanilla want cool air to sit against. Evening is its natural setting, and it works particularly well for dinners, dates and nights out. It is distinctive enough that it will be noticed, so go lightly if you are wearing it somewhere enclosed.

Who will love it

Rasasi designates Hawas Elixir as unisex, and that is how it wears. The mint and lavender pull it in a traditionally masculine direction while the chocolate and vanilla pull the other way, and it lands comfortably in the middle.

It is a strong pick if you like gourmand fragrances but find most of them too sweet, because the mugwort and mint cut the sugar considerably. It is also worth trying if you enjoy fougere style fragrances built on lavender and want one with an unexpected twist. What it is not is a fresh fragrance, and it is not a summer scent.

How to get the best from it

Two to three sprays is enough given how well it performs. Apply to the neck and chest rather than the wrists if you want to smell it on yourself throughout the day, since the dry down is where the best of it lives. Do not rub after spraying. Give it a good fifteen minutes before judging it, because the minty opening is the least representative part of the fragrance. Store it upright, cool and away from light.
