Reef 33 smells of golden saffron cut through with green, herbal rosemary, sitting on warm agarwood. Three notes, nothing else, and it is one of the most influential Arabian fragrances of the last decade.
That last part is not marketing. Reef 33 is widely regarded in the fragrance community as the original of the saffron and rosemary over oud structure, and several better known Arabian releases have been built on the same idea since. If you have smelled something similar elsewhere and wondered where it came from, this is usually the answer.
The notes, and a warning about them
- Top: Indian saffron
- Heart: Rosemary
- Base: Agarwood (oud)
That is the complete pyramid as recorded on Fragrantica and published by Reef. Three materials.
Be careful what you read elsewhere. At least one major retailer publishes a completely different list for Reef 33, showing citrus zest, sea salt, jasmine, orange blossom, amber and sandalwood. Those notes belong to a different product entirely. If a listing shows you six or more notes for this fragrance, it is wrong.
What Reef 33 actually smells like, phase by phase
The first ten minutes
Golden and spiced. Indian saffron arrives rich and bittersweet, with the faintly leathery quality saffron always carries, and many wearers notice a soft red berry nuance alongside it even though no fruit is listed anywhere in the composition. That phantom fruitiness is a known effect of saffron at high concentration.
It smells expensive immediately, which is most of why the fragrance built its reputation.
The next hour
Then the rosemary arrives, and this is the part that makes Reef 33 worth writing about. Rosemary is green, herbal and faintly camphorous, the smell of the kitchen herb rather than anything perfumed. Almost no oud fragrance would touch it.
Here it cuts straight across the saffron, and the two together produce an aromatic, slightly metallic leather effect that does not exist anywhere else at this price. Whether you like Reef 33 comes down almost entirely to whether that combination works on you.
The rest of the day
Agarwood builds slowly underneath. It is warm, smoky and resinous rather than the sharp medicinal oud some people fear, and it becomes more pronounced as the hours pass. By evening the fragrance has settled into something fully and warmly Arabian, with the saffron still faintly present.
Is it a strong oud?
No, and this surprises people. The agarwood is supporting rather than dominant, and it is nothing like the barnyard or medicinal ouds that put beginners off. If harsh oud has been a problem for you before, Reef 33 is an unusually approachable way in.
Equally, if you came specifically for a heavy traditional oud, you may find it too polite. A few wearers report exactly that.
How long does Reef 33 last?
Reports vary more than usual, which is worth being straight about. Skin longevity ranges from several hours to well beyond a working day depending on skin type, and that spread is typical of saffron and oud compositions where chemistry matters a great deal.
What wearers agree on is fabric. Reef 33 lasts considerably longer on clothing, with more than ten hours regularly reported. If you want the most from it, a spray on a collar or scarf alongside your pulse points is the practical answer. Two to three sprays is plenty; this is not a fragrance that rewards a heavy hand.
Who made it
Reef 33 was composed by Kevin Mathys and launched in 2020 by Reef Perfumes of Saudi Arabia. A named perfumer is uncommon in this price bracket, and the discipline of making three materials work this well is the clearest evidence of why it matters.
The honest view
Most people who try Reef 33 rate it highly, and it is enormously popular in Saudi Arabia in particular. It is not universal though.
A minority find the saffron reads synthetic or slightly medicinal on their skin. A few expected a heavier oud than the composition delivers. And because the whole fragrance rests on one unusual pairing rather than a long note list, there is less to fall back on if that pairing does not suit you.
This is a fragrance to test rather than blind buy. A 2ml sample costs very little and answers the question properly.
Reef 33 or Reef 33 White?
Both share the saffron and oud backbone and take it in different directions.
Reef 33 is the original, and the rosemary makes it herbal, aromatic and slightly austere.
Reef 33 White, released in 2026, replaces the rosemary with berries. That makes it sweeter, fruitier and considerably easier to like on first spray, though it loses the distinctiveness that made the original worth talking about.
Choose the original if you want the fragrance that built the reputation. Choose White if you want the same warmth without the herbal edge.
When should you wear it?
Cool weather and evenings suit it best, and it is at its most commanding after dark. That said, the rosemary keeps it fresher than most oud fragrances, so it is more wearable in mild weather than you might expect. It is a signature-scent kind of fragrance rather than an everyday office one.

Frequently asked questions
What does Reef 33 smell like?
Rich Indian saffron with a soft berry nuance, cut through by green herbal rosemary, settling onto warm smoky agarwood. The saffron and rosemary together create an aromatic, slightly leathery signature.
What are the notes in Reef 33?
Indian saffron, rosemary and agarwood. Three notes only. Listings showing citrus, sea salt or jasmine are describing a different product.
Is Reef 33 unisex?
Yes. It is sold as unisex and worn by men and women alike, which is the norm for saffron and oud compositions in Gulf perfumery.
Who makes Reef 33?
Reef Perfumes, a Saudi Arabian house. The fragrance was composed by perfumer Kevin Mathys and launched in 2020.
Is Reef 33 worth buying?
If you like saffron or oud and want a version with a genuinely original twist, yes. If you want a crowd-pleasing easy fragrance, the rosemary makes it more challenging than most. Try a sample first.
Does Reef 33 smell like other Arabian fragrances?
Several later releases have followed the same saffron, rosemary and oud structure, which is why it feels familiar to people who know the category. Reef 33 came first.
