Hulmi by Brandy: Rum, Incense and Dried Fruit

Hulmi is the most complex fragrance Brandy makes. Twenty-four published notes across three tiers, which is niche-house territory and almost unheard of at this price.

The opening alone runs eight materials. Rum leads it boozy and warm, olibanum brings incense in from the very first spray, and bitter orange, grapefruit and bergamot cut through with citrus while cardamom, ginger and pink pepper layer on spice. It is a lot at once, and deliberately so.

The heart turns richer and darker. Dried fruits and white tobacco give it a leathery sweetness, saffron adds glow, and tuberose, osmanthus, orris and jasmine build a floral structure underneath that most boozy orientals never bother with.

The base is the long game. Tonka and vanilla for warmth, myrrh and labdanum for resin, patchouli, cedar and vetiver for earth and dryness, musk to hold it together. Eight more materials, and they are what make this last.

How it wears

With this many resins and woods in the base, longevity is not in question. The citrus and rum opening burns off within the first hour, and what follows carries the rest of the day.

Autumn and winter, evenings. This is not a daytime office fragrance and it would be unfair to your colleagues to treat it as one.

Who it suits

Anyone who wants a fragrance with genuine complexity rather than a single clear idea. It rewards paying attention, because it moves considerably over a full wear.
