Safari Squeeze is the most interesting bottle in the Bujairami range and the one almost nobody explains properly. Lime, mint and blood mandarin open it cold and sharp, then it turns tropical: guava, cassis and coconut over candied fruits, ambergris, moss and a thread of transparent oud. It is a fruit fragrance with real structure underneath, not a sweet-shop accord.

Inspired By

Bujairami’s own listing states that Safari Squeeze is inspired by Tales from Zanzibar by Memoirs of a Perfume Collector. That is the manufacturer’s stated reference, published on their own site.

This is a far more obscure original than most dupes chase, which is why you will struggle to find anyone else explaining it. Tales from Zanzibar launched in 2021 as an extrait de parfum from a small independent house, and it is genuinely hard to buy: Les Senteurs in London list it at £195 for 75ml, the equivalent of around £260 per 100ml, and it is frequently out of stock. Safari Squeeze is £37.99.

We checked the note lists against each other, and they match completely. Les Senteurs publish Tales from Zanzibar as lime, red mandarin, pink pepper and mint over coconut, guava and cassis, on a base of musk cocktail, candied fruits, ambergris, transparent oud and moss. Bujairami publish Safari Squeeze as lime, mint, blood mandarin and pink pepper over guava, cassis and coconut, on candied fruits, musk, ambergris, moss and agarwood. Twelve notes, same twelve notes, with blood mandarin and red mandarin being the same material and transparent oud and agarwood describing the same accord.

A matching note list is not a matching smell, and it would be dishonest to pretend otherwise. Note lists tell you which materials are in a fragrance, not their quality or how they are balanced. An independent extrait at £260 per 100ml uses materials a £37.99 eau de parfum cannot, and the difference usually shows in the ambergris and oud base: the original has more depth and a smoother, longer finish. Safari Squeeze runs brighter and sweeter, and leans harder on the fruit. As an interpretation of a very expensive and very hard-to-find fragrance, it is an unusually faithful one.

The comparison refers to the scent profile only. This is Bujairami’s own composition, in its own bottle and its own packaging, which are distinct from the original in every respect. There Is a Second Take on This, and Squeeze Is the Closer One

Safari Squeeze matches all twelve of the original’s notes. Safari Breeze shares four or five of them: coconut, mint, cassis and moss. It swaps the lime and mandarin for grapefruit, adds jasmine and vetiver, and leaves out the guava, candied fruits, ambergris and oud entirely.

So buy this one if you want the closest interpretation of Tales from Zanzibar. Buy Safari Breeze if you want something greener, drier and easier to wear to an office, with the tropical fruit turned down.

The mint and pink pepper in the opening are what keep this from being another sweet fruit fragrance: they give it a cold, green bite before the guava and coconut arrive. Coconut here is the dry, creamy kind rather than suncream, and the cassis adds a tart blackcurrant edge. What makes the composition unusual is the base, where moss, ambergris and a light oud sit under the candied fruit and stop it collapsing into sugar.

Performance

Expect good projection for the first two to three hours while the citrus and guava are doing the work, then a sweeter, mossy drydown that holds on skin for six hours or so and longer on clothing. Fruit-forward fragrances tend to fade faster than ouds, and this one holds up better than most because of the ambergris and moss underneath. As always, performance varies with skin type and weather.

When to Wear It

Summer, warm evenings, holidays, daytime. This is a hot-weather bottle and it is at its best in heat, where the lime and mint have room to lift. It works in a cool British summer too, but it is wasted in winter.

Anyone who likes tropical fruit without sickliness, and anyone who has worn the usual mango-and-coconut summer fragrances and wanted something with more going on beneath. It also suits collectors who know the original and have given up trying to buy it. Fully unisex.
