When a retailer lists a clone, they frequently copy the original fragrance’s note pyramid onto the interpretation rather than publishing the actual composition. How to judge a dupe claim properly
Four steps, and they take about two minutes.
Pull both note lists from the same source. Fragrantica for preference, since it records compositions independently of whoever is selling them. Retailer copy is the least reliable source there is.
Count what actually overlaps as a fraction of the original’s full list. Not a percentage, because nobody publishes a formula and no percentage is verifiable. If two fragrances share three notes out of twelve, say that.
Check which version you are comparing. Flankers and reformulations mean one famous name can cover several different compositions.
Treat family resemblance as family resemblance. Salty aquatic freshness over ambergris is a genre, not a formula. Dozens of fragrances share a structure without any of them copying each other.

Barakkat Rouge 540

Intense Peach
Ripe peach and blood orange over cognac, rum and davana, finishing on a deep resinous base of benzoin, vanilla, sandalwood and patchouli. Widely compared to Tom Ford Bitter Peach and generally regarded as the closest accessible version of that style.
The note worth knowing about is davana, an oil from an Indian herb that genuinely shifts with skin chemistry. It reads as boozy apricot on some people and rum-soaked jam on others, which is why reviews of this fragrance vary so much. Test it yourself rather than trusting someone else’s description. Imperium
This one is a case study in why dupe claims need checking. Fragrance World and its retailers market Imperium as an interpretation of Roja Elysium. The community disagrees, and fairly consistently: wearers who know both report it sitting much closer to the Creed Aventus style, with one reviewer noting it reads as an Aventus flanker rather than an Elysium alternative.
Its actual composition is unusually complex for the price: grapefruit, bergamot, lime, lemon, artemisia, galbanum and thyme up top, then vetiver, pink pepper, cedar, apple, cypriol, juniper, blackcurrant and florals, over ambergris, leather, benzoin, labdanum and vanilla. Longevity reports cluster around five to six hours on skin with low projection, though owners describe it as exceptional on clothing.
Jack of Clubs
Cardamom, ginger and bergamot over lavender and geranium, finishing on cedar and vetiver. A woody spicy composition from 2022 with a distinctly powdery dry down, which is the thing that divides opinion on it.
One owner summed it up usefully: it smells like the fragrance it interprets and performs like it too, which is to say quietly. If you want the scent, it delivers. If you wanted the clone to outperform the original, it does not.
Absolute Leather
Leather and ginger from the first spray, softened by jasmine and osmanthus, finishing on frankincense, labdanum and patchouli. Presented consistently across retailers as an interpretation of Carolina Herrera Stallion Leather.
Putting leather at the top rather than the base is unusual, and the osmanthus in the heart, a flower that smells of apricot and soft leather at once, is what stops it being one-dimensional. Blue Magician
Pear, mandarin and orange over ginger and orange blossom, finishing on akigalawood and white musk. Positioned against Ex Nihilo Blue Talisman, and opinion on how close it lands is genuinely split, with some calling it very near and others finding it lighter.
What everyone agrees on is that it improves substantially with time in the bottle. One owner tracked theirs across two months and found it went from barely projecting to noticeably better. If a fresh bottle disappoints, wait before judging it. Blue Magician.
Midori
Crisp green apple with bergamot and mandarin over petitgrain, cedar and violet, on musk, oakmoss and amberwood. Compared to Parfums de Marly Greenley, with wearers describing the openings as very close. The dry down divides people more than the opening does, so it is one to try on skin. Midori.
The Just line
Four releases at the most accessible prices in the range, covering very different ground.
Just Wardi is the standout. Coconut, peach and mandarin over ylang ylang and rose, finishing on vanilla and caramel. Wearers repeatedly describe it as Lattafa Yara made sweeter and longer lasting, and several say they prefer it to the original.
Just Anabi is dark cherry with saffron over smoke, leather and osmanthus. Compared to Tom Ford Lost Cherry, though the cherry here sits further back, blended into the smoke rather than in front of it.
Just Aswad carries a misleading name. It gestures at a well known Lattafa release, but wearers who know both say it sits far closer to Dior Sauvage Elixir, and the note structure agrees: nutmeg, cardamom and cinnamon over lavender, finishing on liquorice, sandalwood and vetiver.
Just Lychee opens exactly as promised and then does not stay that way. The lychee fades within the first half hour into a powdery rose, and that is where it spends most of its time. Buy it for the rose, not the lychee.
Urban Man Elixir
Worth including precisely because we could not verify it. Three different note lists circulate for this fragrance and none stands up. The Fragrantica entry is disputed in its own comments by a user pointing out the notes were imported from Armaf’s identically named Club de Nuit Urban Man Elixir. A second widely copied list is Le Male Elixir’s own pyramid pasted across. A third differs again.

Where Fragrance World is strong, and where it is not
Strong: fruity and gourmand compositions, where the raw materials matter less and the impression carries. Intense Peach and Just Wardi are both genuinely good fragrances judged on their own terms rather than as copies.
Weaker: anything where the original’s quality lives in the refinement rather than the idea. Interpretations of complex niche fragrances tend to get the opening right and then flatten out, which is exactly what owners report about Imperium.
Inconsistent: performance. Some releases project for hours, others fade quickly, and several improve markedly after weeks of settling in the bottle. That variability is the most common complaint about the house.
Should you buy a dupe at all?
It depends what you want.
If you want a specific designer fragrance, nothing else will satisfy that, and no interpretation at a fraction of the price will either.
